Nast created the Republican elephant and Democrat donkey!!! I had no idea. I wonder what contemporary cartoonist, if any, even comes close to his creative influence.
Thanks Steve, yes, Nast-the-artist was in a category all his own (also basically inventing idea/image of Santa Claus! ). Some good elephant drawings coming up, plus more on Nast's later life--not all easy-- by his grandson)
